Overlay-Only Tutorial
Record a transparent or green-screen telemetry layer on your iPhone, then composite it onto footage from your action camera or drone.
When to use overlay-only
Use this workflow when you want OverlayGPS gauges and maps on video shot with a GoPro, Insta360, drone, or any other camera—while your iPhone rides along to capture GPS and telemetry.
Step 1 — Mount both cameras
Mount your action camera or drone for the main picture. Keep your iPhone nearby with OverlayGPS running so location and motion data match the same ride.
Step 2 — Enable overlay-only mode
In OverlayGPS, turn on overlay-only recording. Choose a transparent layer or green-screen background so the telemetry is easy to key or blend in your editor.
Step 3 — Record together
Start both recordings at roughly the same time. OverlayGPS captures speed, elevation, heading, distance, map, and other HUD elements without recording the iPhone camera scene.
Step 4 — Composite in editing
Import both clips into your editor. Align the timelines, then place the OverlayGPS layer above your camera footage. Use transparency or chroma key to reveal only the gauges and map.
Tips
- Match frame rates when possible so the overlay stays locked to the action.
- Keep the iPhone powered and GPS-locked before you start moving.
- Trim both clips to the same start point for the cleanest sync.
